MCHS Boys Basketball AT Page

Published by under basketball,mchs,page panthers

The only sports event this week besides wrestling was a makeup game at Page for boy’s basketball.  Madison started slow….and didn’t get much better.  There was a little spurt in the fourth period when Madison was down by 20 and Bobby Ford hit back to back three pointers, followed by a Travis Warren three pointer, but we were still down by 11 and couldn’t recover, finally losing to the Panthers 70-55.  From the MCHSAthletics web page: The Varsity Boys Basketball team lost at Page County tonight 70-55. Page scored the first 12 points of the game and Madison never got it back to single digits the remainder of the game. Travis Warren led the Mountaineers with 17 points. Nick Paxton had 10 points and Bobby Ford added 9 points.

Wrestling–Mountaineer Classic Wrestling Tournament

From the MCHSAthletics website: The Wrestling team hosted 9 other schools this afternoon in the Mountaineer Classic and finished the day with a runner-up finish to Fluvanna. Madison won their pool beating Courtland (46-33), Monticello (41-33), Western Albemarle (54-30) and Dinwiddie (38-36) Madison faced off against Fluvanna, who also won their pool, and lost 44-26. Ethan O’Connell and Anthony Jewett both went 5-0 and Jeff Foster was 4-0 on the day to lead the Mountaineers. Jacob Welch, Lynn Welch and Derek Nicholson all were 4-1.

I shot Madison’s first three matches, all wins.  Here are links:

Madison vs Courtland

Madison vs Monticello

Madison vs Western Albemarle

The lighting for wrestling is especially tough, the wrestlers are usually looking down, and there is NO light reflected off those mats.  So, for something different, I shot the first match with strobes, mounted high on the bleachers in two corners.  The color is MUCH better, and those faces pressed into the mat are now lit up…but it’s a lot of work to set it up…..

Derek Nicholson went 4-1 for the day. I saw his first three matches and they didn't last long, quick pins, the longest match lasting 49 seconds.

…and the next to matches I shot natural light, no strobes….

Ethan O'Connell was 5-0 for the day.

Jeff Foster was 4-0 for the day.
